Google's AI told people Flock cameras were full of gold. They weren't.

Google briefly gave searchers a financial-sounding reason to dismantle Flock Safety license-plate cameras. Its AI Overview said one unit held one to five grams of gold along with two to 23 pounds of copper. At contemporary metal prices, the upper gold estimate implied roughly $650 in value. The copper claim was even less plausible because TechSpot reports that the complete camera weighs only about three pounds. No teardown, bill of materials, or laboratory analysis supported either figure.

The answer grew from a running joke among critics of Flock's surveillance network. Memes and videos portrayed the roadside devices as valuable scrap waiting to be harvested, turning opposition to automated monitoring into a fantasy about high-tech pinatas. Google's summary stripped away that context. It cited an anonymous Substack post that based scrap values on online discussions rather than testing, and an AI-generated Instagram video from an account with no apparent hardware expertise. Speculation was reformatted as a clean technical claim.

Google later changed the Overview. The revised response says the cameras contain only the trace quantities of precious metals normally found in compact electronics and rejects the idea that pounds of copper can be recovered from a three-pound enclosure. Small amounts of gold and base metals may exist in circuit boards, connectors, and wiring, but extracting them would require tools, time, and skill for little return. The episode shows how an AI summary can sound certain while failing basic checks of scale, provenance, and whether its sources are joking.

Flock's hardware captures license plates, converts images into searchable text, and can surface matches for police or private customers within seconds. That wider debate over networked surveillance gave the meme its charge, while the mistaken Overview gave it undeserved authority.
